What Does the following swab Report Indicate? 

Hi. My vaginal swab report shows- Moderate number of epithelial cells and Gram positive bacilli and scanty pus cells are seen (Vaginal swab). And pap smear shows- Smears studied show superficial squamous epithelial cells with intermediate squamous epithelial cells and metaplastic squamous cells. Background shows few doderlein bacilli and neutrophils. Smears are negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy. What to make out of this? Do I have vaginal infection? And why metaplastic cells in cervix? Are they cancerous?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Your smear shows presence of some bacteria along with some pus cells and neutrophils. It indicates presence of minor bacterial infection in the vaginal area. You can take Levofloxacin 250 mg (Levoflox) twice a day for five days. If pain is there, you can combine it with a painkiller that suits you. Antacid can also be taken to prevent heartburn. Maintain proper hygiene in the pelvic area, avoid scented soaps and perfumes and you should be fine.

Now to answer your other concern, you are confusing terms metaplasia and dysplasia. While dysplasia indicates changes that should be investigated further for cancer, metaplasia is a normal feature of cells in the cervical area and should not raise any concern. In addition, your report itself suggests that there is no indication of any lesion or malignancy which negates the presence of any cancerous change. So you can stop worrying about that.
